WAYS TO PATCH CONCRETE

When it comes to repairing concrete, you need to have a sound understanding of exactly how to patch it as this will not only save you time, but it will also save you a great deal of effort and money.

Repairing Hairline Cracks

Water should be mixed with basic Portland cement when repairing hairline cracks. Wet the old concrete along the hairline crack with water for some hours before you add grout. Moisten the original concrete, however, don’t use too much water so that it won’t accumulate on the surface.

Apply the mixture with a trowel. Fill the cracks, then scrape the surface so as to make it smooth. The patch should be covered with plastic and then left to dry for several hours. The patch should be moisten once day for five days and it should be left covered at all other times. The patch should be done curing after five days, therefore ,it can be left uncovered and dry.

Repairing Sidewalk Cracks

If a crack is larger than a simple hairline, you have to enlarge it with a hammer and chisel before you can actually repair it. As you are chipping the crack, make sure it is done in a way that widens the bottom more than the top so as to create a better bond between the patch and the original slab.

The crack should be chipped until it is about 1 inch deep and free of all dirt or debris. Also, spray with a hose to ensure all the dirt and loose particles have been removed. Scrub it, afterwards.

The next thing to do is to apply a concrete adhesive to the surface using a paint brush. Let it dry slightly so that it has a sticky texture. When you’ve gotten a good, sticky surface for the concrete, add water to premixed concrete and then patch the crack. If it is a small patching jobs, pre-mixed concrete patch can be used. If you use ready-mix concrete patch, the only thing you need to do is add water.

Fill the crack completely and then, tamp the patch. Scape the surface with a trowel as the concrete settles. To create a smooth surface, use a metal trowel, but if a rough surface is what you want, switch the trowel for a wood float.

Let it dry for several hours, then cover the patch with plastic. Wet the area once a day for five days while keeping the surface covered at all other times.

Repairing Concrete Driveways

The process involved in repairing driveway cracks is almost the same as that of sidewalk cracks, but a driveway repair must have the ability to withstand more weight than a sidewalk. This means that gravel should be used in place of sand for the mixture.

You must first chisel, clean, and apply adhesive to the hollowed crack. If you want to make the strongest repair possible, you have to chisel deeper than that of a sidewalk repair.  Repeat the same steps for applying the concrete as it was done for a sidewalk. You mustn’t drive over the new repairs as the concrete settles over the course of about five days so as not to risk damaging the repair.

Tips for Painting Your Ceiling

Sometimes, to achieve a refreshed look in your home, all you need to do is paint a particular area of your house. Each piece needs to be approached in slightly different ways and also requires different tools to get the best results possible, I have been a painter in Chesterfield and i know what i am saying. One of the easiest places to paint is the ceiling, especially if the surface is simply flat with no molding or chipped paint to work on.

Usually, ceilings are painted white, and this is undoubtedly a good choice, however, you have to think carefully about the kind of white you want to go with. There are different hues, ranging from a warm-toned white to whites with more of a cool blue. Make sure the hue compliments the color of your walls and your décor by bringing  color swatches or paint chips with you when choosing your ceiling color.

If you have low ceilings, make sure they are painted a shade or two lighter than your walls so as to add height, and a shade or two darker if your ceilings are high. Nevertheless, white doesn’t have to be your only choice. With the proper room and architecture, using a contrasting color to paint your ceiling can add some excitement to your room.

Though painting the ceiling is an easy task, you need to ensure you tape your walls and cover them with a drop cloth. It is also of import to remove all curtains and pictures from the walls and also remove as much furniture as you can so as to have a clear access to the ceiling from all points in the room.

It is somewhat easier to paint the walls and ceiling at the same time, although if you are going to paint them in different colors, you will need to make sure you protect one from the other just like if you were painting only the ceiling. In cases involving painting walls and ceiling together, start with the ceiling and work your way down.

To start, “cut in” the edges and other odd areas, such as lights, woodworks and ceiling fans. A small brush of 1″ or less should be used for this task.  After this is done, you can begin rolling the ceiling. Using a roller on the ceiling is more simple and easy than using even a large brush unless your area is exceptionally small.

If the room is large, you don’t have to wait for the paint to dry before starting your second coat. However, you have to make sure the first coat is dry so that you can avoid flaws.

HOW TO REMODEL A SMALL KITCHEN

These decorating ideas can help you end up with a sophisticated kitchen, irrespective of whether it is in a high rise or in the suburbs.

Downsize it

A small space can cause you as much efforts as large spaces or even more so, especially when you add storage issue to the typical kitchen challenges of functions and fixtures.

If your kitchen have a small space, you can’t have a kitchen that is a jack-of-all-trades, that is, accommodating mail, schoolwork, laundry, hunting, recipe and cooking duties. Unless you don’t cook at all, the small kitchen’s main purpose is meal preparation. So, make your first focus be the function, ensuring that you have the appliances and work areas needed. Using innovative or scaled down appliances like refrigerator and freezer drawers, pint-sized microwaves, stoves and single sinks can save you a bit of space. You will have function without all the square footage. You can also consider a small-scale island or a counter-topped cart that you can roll away into a closet when not in use, if workspace is at a premium.

Open it up

In order not to feel claustrophobic in your tiny kitchen, get organized and trade the top cupboards for open storage. You can use shelving, magnetic knife, pot racks or spice holders. This will not only make your kitchen look more spacious, it is also a great way to show off your favorite dishes, shiny pans and pots, even artwork.

Mix up the Materials

Although you may not have wide-open spaces in your small kitchen, you do have a lot of choices. In a bigger space, you can easily hide flaws or separate competing styles but in a small space, everything has to work, even the mix of wood and metals and other materials. Because your little kitchen may be short on architectural details, it is up to you to add the style in compelling countertop surfaces, fixtures, cabinetry, flooring, color and lighting. The best way to do this is to create a mix board with samples and swatches of everything you are considering. Note that using the same style and color of fixtures and cabinet pulls can also give your kitchen a unify look.

Color it Big

To change the atmosphere and perceived size of the kitchen, the color of walls, counters, appliances, stools and even the dishtowels matters. Light colors or pastels with good touch of white, can reflect light drawing the eyes upward and making the room seem taller. Bold colorations can also be very effective in smaller kitchens.

How to Paint Exterior Brick

The painted brick has its own style and is seen more as decorating trends change. If you plan on painting the exterior brick, make sure to patch cracks and grooves that are often caused by ivy that breaks through when the bricks are exposed. Kindly follow these step recommended by a professional exterior painter in St. Louis.

Step 1 – Clean the brick

Start with your pressure washer. It is the best way to clean exterior brick. Set the washer in place between 1500 and 2000 psi. Do not go more than that pressure range when you wash the bricks, because too much force may damage the mortar. Add soap to the current to remove more difficult deposits. The main point of washing is to clean all debris, dirt and peeling paint, nothing else.

After the washing, leave the brick with enough time to dry completely. This will take a few days at least because brick is a porous material that retains moisture. Do note that the pressure washer can be dangerous. Follow all product instructions and always point the water jet away from you and others.

Step 2 – Remove peeling paint and fix mortar

Remove all loose paint that is left on the face of the brick or otherwise it will cause early flaking when you finally implement your coat. Use a hand scraper for large rooms. Do not use a wire brush. It is easy to get carried away and leave imperfections on the brick with a wire brush.

Step 3 – Sand the brick smooth

Smoothen the brick with either a palm sander or circular sander with a minimum of 80 sandpaper. Next, repair any missing and damaged mortar. You can use an acrylic premixed mortar patch that allows you to initiate painting as soon as it is dry. Alternatively, you can mix a mortar dust yourself, but it will take a few weeks to dry before you can start priming.

Step 4 – Prime brick

Always use a latex or acrylic masonry primer paint of high quality for exterior bricks. Remember that all the mortar and bricks must be primed. The places where mildew and efflorescence occurred first must be the first to be primed. This is so that you can provide an extra layer if necessary. It usually takes 1-2 hours for the layer to dry. Make time for the primer to dry completely before moving on to painting.

How to Pick Interior Paint Colors

To make a great impact on your interior redesign project, you have to pick the right paint colour. If you have an idea of a colour that would be great for your wall, you have to select fabrics that would coordinate nicely with this paint color.

Purus the paint swatches

Let’s say you are looking for coordinating blue colour, visit the paint store and review the collection of paint colors. Use the loose flags of paint colors and check out the changes in blue on each of the color swatches. You could find about ten to 20 flags of blue, each with different tints. In this case, what do you do?

Compare paint shades

After finding the tint you are looking for, go up and down the shade of the color. This up-and-down shade usually represent the same color family with a darker and lighter version of the color you’ve selected.

Narrow down your paint choices

Buy sample quarts of all three colors as this will help you narrow down your primary selection. Take note of the fact that when you are selecting these colors at the store, you are probably viewing them under a fluorescent light. This is not ideal as your home may have a different bulb temperature. You have to test the colors in the location you are planning to paint.

Select your paint finish

You will also need to decide the type of paint finish you want to use, if it is flats, eggshell, stain, semigloss or no or low-VOC environmentally friendly paint. You can use this quick guide.

  1. if the condition of your walls, woodwork or molding is very bad, then you need to lean towards flat paint.
  2. Eggshell or flat finishes of paint usually show little of the drips or irregularities of the old paint layer you are covering with new paint. It is not an exciting type of finish and it is not as durable as glossy finishes.

iii. For old woodwork and doors, satin finish is a good choice. It has good durability and can easily hide irregular drips.

  1. Semigloss paint is great for use in kitchens, bathrooms and on doors. It is durable and cleanable.
  2. Gloss paint is the most durable finish of all. It provides an exciting shine and it draws attention to the molding and doors in contemporary interior. However, it should be used only when surfaces are clean and without drip marks, bumps or other imperfections as its shine will enhance any problem.
  3. Environmentally friendly paints can be found in all of the above finishes. They usually contain no or very low amounts of the volatile organic compounds found in most paints.

Audition your paint colors

Open the three sample quarts of your chosen color and start painting about a 2-foot square on each wall. Test paint at the floor bordering the base molding,  just under the crown molding and in the middle of the wall and near the ceiling. Check out the paint sample patches in the day and in the evening. View at a different distances.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN HIRING A LOCAL PAINTERS

Compare more than two contractors

Compare at least three different contractors. Call in at different contractors for your job and make sure you are home for the initial meeting with them. This way, you will know how much time the contractors took in assessing the state of your home. The longer the contractor takes, the more realistic the estimate you will get. Any estimates that sound too good to be true may actually be illegal.

Even a professional and experienced painter will need more than just a quick walk around your house.

Verify insurance and license

Some states require a contractor’s license while others allow laissez faire capitalism to reign free. If you hire a painter outside legal boundaries, it forfeits you as the homeowner, the right to recover your money for promises neglected. A good contractor should be able to provide you with a certificate of insurance and any necessary safety, bonding and compliance information for hired employees.

Invite and Interview

Invite the contractor into your home and tell him everything you want painted including everything you want protected like furniture, pianos, plants, patios. Ask the contractor questions like the kind of paint he uses, how many coats, How he fixes gaffe spills and the personal protection equipment he uses. If he is not willing to talk or becomes defensive, then he is not honest.

Call the References and check past works

Get a list of references from your prospective contractors and call them to know about their experience with the contractor. If there is a history of positive references, then it is a good sign. Also, check out the jobs the painters did years ago to see how the paint job is holding up.

Check out credentials.

Before hiring someone, consider his credentials. Although, membership in a local or trade business group isn’t a guarantee of quality work, it still show a level of reliability and commitment on his part. Verify also whether the painter has the necessary license(s).

Get estimates.

Ask for written estimate from each contractor. It must include a breakdown of labor, cost of materials, the number of coats of paint and primer, the model and brand of materials, and a thorough description of the amount of surface preparation that needs to be done.

Hold out

On a final note, do not make a large down payment  and also, withhold the final payment, until you are hundred percent satisfied with the job

DIFFERENT TYPES OF WALL PAINTS

There are different types of wall paints, the more you know about suitable paint-able surfaces and the result that can be achieved, the easier it will be to make the correct choice. It is also possible to mix different types wall paint in a room, but you have to know what you are doing. Below are some great options rather than just painting kitchen cabinets white, or painting bathroom green, take a look at these collection.

Matte Paint

Matte color is the one of the most common of interior wall paints. There is no sheen or shine to the finish, which makes it ideal for walls and ceilings where no visual distractions are wanted. Although it can take more than a single coat to create a good solid color, it is easy to apply. It can be applied with a roller or brush and it works well in covering imperfections on your walls.

Matte Enamel

Matte enamel is much like matte paint, but it is far more durable. It is much easier to clean and it rarely needs retouching as matte paint usually do, which gives it a great advantage, particularly if you have young children. It is also great for the kitchen, where you will need to wipe the walls regularly. The visual effect is similar to that of matte paint and it can also be applied in the same way.

Satin

This is one of the types of wall paint that many people know of, but don’t really understand. The finish is usually somewhere between matte and gloss and it produces a low, soft sheen, which makes it suitable for areas where you will need to clean the walls regularly. However, a satin finish shouldn’t be used where you have a wall that has imperfections because it will make them more obvious.

Eggshell

This finish has a shine that is very subtle but without the same smoothness like that of a satin finish. Therefore, eggshell finish does not highlight imperfections as much, which makes it a much more suitable interior wall paint. It is easy to apply and it can often cover well with just a single coat, making it the best choice for many people.

Gloss Paint

Other than matte paint, this is the most common interior wall paint. It is the type of paint that you can use on most walls, even though some people use it sparingly on wall surfaces and prefer to apply it on woodwork due to its high shine. Gloss paint usually show all the imperfections on a wall and to achieve an even coverage on a wall, it will often need more than just a single coat.

BEST COLORS FOR KITCHEN CABINETS

Sunny Days

Add instant warmth to your kitchen, especially if it faces north or lacks windows, by coating the cabinets in buttery yellow. It is a hue that effortlessly blend in with stained wood countertops. You can freshen the look with touches of white.

Elegant in Black

One of the colors that never go out of style is black and it always add sophistication to a room. Sand-color countertops and leaded-glass inserts will prevent black cabinets from taking over the space. Bronze knobs and pulls can also be used to enhance the elegant feel.

Seeing Red

Bright red cabinets will make a cheerful statement in your kitchen, transforming a plain flat-front cabinet into something extraordinary. Stainless-steel appliances, silvery pulls and white countertops will provide some visual relief and eye-appealing shimmer.

Good-Natured Green

If you want a color that will get along with everything, always choose green. This soft shade can be paired with an abundance of warm wood accents. The green cabinets will give a casual and welcoming feel to the space. Also, black countertops and any other dark accent will make it balanced.

Tranquil Gray

Gray cabinets create a soul soothing and calm air in the kitchen, and touches of yellow takes away the serious side of gray, adding sunshine to the space.

Just a Dose

If you don’t want to go extremely bold, choose the portion of color that is right for you by picking a shade that is toned down with a hint of gray. The result will be a sophisticated and striking color.

Elegant Ease

You can combine quartersawn oak cabinets with limestone flooring and elegant Pietra del Cardosa countertops to give your kitchen modern appeal without feeling cold. Though the natural wood color gives warmth, the simple styling of the cabinetry will match the sophistication of the other rooms.

Fresh Take on Cabin Style

You can pair Clarendon cabinetry pairs with an aqua enameled range in order to get a casual appeal in your kitchen, especially if it’s a lakeside home. To enhance the relaxed nature of the space, concrete counter-tops should be used.  Dark wood floors holds the setting together with warm, timeless style.

Bold red and black

If you want a showpiece kitchen, use a bold combo of black and red. A tomato-red lacquered island can be used with dark wedge wood cabinets and also with 18-inch black granite floor tiles.
These were the varieties i had to choose from when i hired a Chesterfield painter to finish up an apartment for a client and it will very easy to make choices due to this knowledge.

Home Remodeling Tips

Most people consider remodeling their homes whenever they discover a problem regarding lack of space or safety issues. However, there are also plenty of people who remodel their homes for aesthetic purposes. There are a wide range of renovations you can incorporate in your home whether it’s lighting improvements or completely remodeling your living room. Even though it is believed that home remodeling is costly, there are a few ideas you can take into consideration to make the entire process go more smoothly. If you’ve been thinking about remodeling your home for a long time now but you’re holding back because of the expensive prices, these Home Remodeling Tips can help you.

Best Home Remodeling Tips

1. Prioritize specific areas of your home

Although it is common to get excited about renovating your home to achieve a more pleasant environment, it’s essential to prioritize specific areas of your home. The most serious home maintenance problems should be tackled first. If you want to remodel specific areas of your house to make it more aesthetically pleasing, you should do so after you’ve managed to fix the more pressing issues. When renovating an entire space of your home like the kitchen, practical improvements will be done as the construction process develops. It’s important to understand that if your home renovating project strictly follows a specific design layout, you may end up overlooking hidden structural problems along the way.

2. Trust the expertise of professionals

Although small renovation projects could be done on your own, bigger and more complicated projects require the expertise of a professional. It is always recommended to hire a professional especially if you want to achieve a specific outcome for your home renovation. Repainting an accent wall can easily be done using DIY methods which will help reduce your expenses. However, any additions, major installations or remodeling should only be done by professionals. The most common examples of this are new lighting, HVAC and plumbing.

3. Have a realistic time frame for your project

If your home remodeling requires a contractor, it’s very important to contact him several months in advance. Most local contractors already have previous projects that they’re currently working on. If you don’t reach out to them in advance, there is a high possibility that they wouldn’t be able to complete the project within your desired time frame. Before booking a contractor, it’s always best to discuss about the completion date of your project to avoid any problems or disappointments in the future.

4. Do not reuse old materials

Generally, contractors have their own materials which are priced cheaper than the ones you can purchase from hardware stores. However, if you plan on providing your own materials for your project you shouldn’t reuse old materials. When you reuse old materials, you wouldn’t have any guarantee that it would function as smoothly as it’s supposed to. Most of the time salvaged materials have poor quality so it may affect the overall quality of your project. There are only a few items which are widely acceptable for completing specific projects such as using reclaimed wood instead of buying brand new pieces. It’s always recommended to invest in new materials rather than compromising the quality of your home renovation project by using salvaged pieces.
